It can be a lengthy and overwhelming process to get a child with an emotional disability diagnosed and treated. Now there are proposed changes to the DSM-5 which will be enacted in 2013. It's important for parents and advocates to provide input and voice concerns and recommendations about the proposed changes to the diagnostic criteria. Remember, the diagnosis is necessary to get services and supports through IEPs and public schools as well as outside agencies. This will impact the diagnostic process and the determination of recommended programs.
We need to make sure that the services and supports that our children need will continue to be provided. As we know, individual education programs are based on students' needs and we determine the needs with evaluations, recommendations, and information. If the basis for that gets changed, it may change the services and supports. We need to be informed and participate in the new criteria in order to ensure that our children maintain current programs.
